# 054 Wrong incentives

Labourers in Food Corporation of India (FCI) earn 4.5 lakhs per month while the Corp. incurs a loss of 18000 crores!!

370 labourers received more than 4 lakhs and 400 labourers between 2 and 2.5 lakhs as wages per month. This is more than what the President of India gets!!

I had once delivered a training programme on Quality to a group of probationary officers (most of whom are MBAs) who rued that in FCI there are various incentives for time of work, extra weight, distance and height to which grains are carried etc. that allowed Departmental workers in FCI to routinely earn around 1.1 lakhs per month. This has led labourers in FCI to have aggressive tendencies and officers have been often been murdered.

Mumbai HC has taken a suo motu cognisance of a media report on this  and ordered the Govt. to stop the practice of loaders employing proxy labourers.

The Union's appeal in SC against the HC had not resulted in their favour. Will the aggressive labour union mend their ways?
