# 061 Cola drink is not half as bad as brewed coffee!

Cola drink is not half as bad as brewed coffee!

Caffeine occurs naturally in more than 60 plants including coffee beans, tea leaves, kola nuts used to flavor soft drink colas, and cacao pods used to make chocolate products. Man-made caffeine is sometimes added to foods, drinks, and medicines. Ninety percent of people in the world use caffeine in one form or another

Popularity of coffee, teas, sodas and energy drinks comes from the caffeine content and its ability to stimulate central nervous system. While consuming some caffeine daily is generally regarded as safe, too much may cause adverse health effects.

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) advised that caffeine intakes from all sources up to 400 mg per day do not raise safety concerns for adults in the general population. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two "energy shot" drinks. So cola is not even half as bad as brewed coffee!

And for adolescents the limit is 100 mg of caffeine a day.

EFSA also advised that single doses of 100 mg of caffeine may increase sleep latency and reduce sleep duration in some adult individuals, particularly when consumed close to bedtime.

The FDA says that caffeine is both a drug and a food additive. A caffeine tablet contains as much caffeine as one to three 5-ounce cups of coffee.

Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes your body lose more water.
