During an audit I appreciated the MD of that org. for his concern for the environment by using papers that are already used on one side as this saves felling of trees. But the appreciation soon evaporated when it was getting sultry and he opened the windows instead of switching on the fan!! (forget about running the the air conditioner installed in the room) This in my opinion is not a matter for appreciation but a case for condemnation since his concern is born more out of his concern for reducing electricity bill rather than saving the environment.
Many people have NOT understood the basic fact: if you produce, you pollute. Prevention of pollution is never in absolute terms. It has to be weighed with various requirements of different interested parties which are not only differing in nature but even opposed to each other. Concern for environment can not be in absolute terms. It can not be at the cost of Quality, Safety, Basic comforts etc. and needs to be balanced. This in fact is the art and science of management - making a fine balance of differing expectations from Customers on Quality of Products, Employees on Salary, Suppliers on pricing and payment to their supplies, Environment on preventing or reducing pollution etc.
