Is this what is called “street smart?”
This happened on 9.12.2011 when I was returning after the audit of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology.
We stopped at the Havanur circle traffic signal. From nowhere a boy appeared and straightaway placed a length of flower garland at the idol of the deity inside the car totally unasked for and to the surprise of the driver of the vehicle. What ensued was a lesson in marketing no Business School ever teaches!
Driver : Flowers to God in the evening? Take it away.
Boy: Flowers are fresh and good for whole of tomorrow, Anna.
Driver: I don’t have money.
Boy: Oh, cut it. Who will believe such stories!
Driver: I mean I don’t have change. I have only a Rs.500/= note. Do you have the change?
Boy: Yes.
The currency changes hands, Boy goes through the motions of checking/taking out the balance and says, “sorry, anna, no change”
Driver: Give back the note and run off with your flowers.
Bo: Pl, Pl Anna, I am a poor boy. Need to sell the flower. Pl give me change.
Driver gives a tenner and asks for balance. Boy says it is Rs10/= and no balance.
Driver: It is worth only Rs. 8/=. Give me Rs. 2/= or take back the flowers.
Boy: Pl, Pl Anna, I am a poor boy. What is Rs.2/= for you. Flower is really worth Rs.10/= and so saying cooly goes off.
Driver: Hey, hold on. Hold on.
Signal changes to green, honking follows; driver mutters (smiling to himself) "how smart the urchin is" as he drives on!!
